* Keep stairways, steps and walkways clear of any toys or objects, in excellent condition and well lit
* Put a gate at the top of every stairway of more than three steps as well as at the bottom of every stairway until the child is a very reliable step climber
* Stairways with three or more steps should have a handrail on either side
* Handrails should be within reach of all children and fixed firmly to the walls 
* To prevent children from falling through the upright spokes of handrails, the distance between each spoke should be approximately 3-1/2 inches
