The Playground

In North America, playground injuries are the number one cause of serious injuries at the child care facility. To reduce the number of playground injuries at your child care facility, be proactive and make outdoor play safer by:

* Enclosing your outdoor play area with a 4-foot high fence with the bottom no more than 3 1/2 inches above the ground.
* Placing the latch on the fence above the reach of the children
* Examining the playground on a daily basis prior to outdoor play time for debris, dilapidated structures, broken or worn equipment, toxic plants, broken glass and animals
* Disposing of any equipment with lead based paint, toxic finishes, small parts that can be swallowed, loose or rusty parts, protruding nails or sharp corners
* Draining standing water
* Providing shaded areas as well as sunlit areas
