Transportation Safety

Motor vehicle accidents are the number one killer and disabler of preschool children in North America. Most vehicle deaths are as a result of children being thrown from the vehicle during an accident. Even though by law, children must be secured while in a car, the government has yet to pass a law on the use of seatbelts in a school bus. Until this law is passed, child care facilities must be extremely cautious when transporting children. This can be done by implementing the following:

1. Only a person with a valid drivers license for that type of vehicle is allowed to operate it
2. People under the influence of alcohol or drugs (prescription and nonprescription) cannot operate the vehicle
3. The vehicle is licensed and registered as well as serviced on a regular basis to perform maintenance checks, oil changes, etc.
4. A First Aid Kit is kept on board each vehicle
5. Do not allow smoking nor playing of music while transporting children
6. The operator of the vehicle should not be wearing earphones nor talking on his/her cell-phone while driving
7. Maintain proper child-to-provider ratios even while transporting children and do not count the operator of the bus as a provider
8. Children should never be left unsupervised in the vehicle
9. Always supervise children as they enter and exit the vehicle
10. Make sure all oncoming traffic has come to a complete stop prior to allowing children to exit the vehicle
11. Have the operator check the vehicle to make sure all children have exited before leaving the vehicle himself/herself
